IPM Mourns Dr. Zena Stein

November 10, 2021—It is with profound sorrow that IPM mourns the loss of Dr. Zena Stein, a brilliant epidemiologist, beloved friend and colleague, and pioneering advocate for women’s health and HIV prevention.

Early in the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Dr. Stein was among the very first to sound the alarm about the increasing rates of HIV infection among women. She passionately and persistently called for discreet prevention methods women could control, sparking the microbicides movement and inspiring our work and that of many others in the field. The advances made to expand women’s prevention options would not have been possible without Dr. Stein at the forefront.

Her work and activism, warmth and generous spirit will have an enduring impact on women’s health and on IPM, the field and all who knew her.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. May we carry her legacy forward.
