Sharon Hillier, PhD, Chair

Dr. Hillier is professor and vice chair for Faculty Affairs and director of infectious disease research in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She holds a joint appointment as professor in the School of Medicine’s Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and is a senior investigator at the Magee-Womens Research Institute.

In 2006, Dr. Hillier was named principal investigator for MTN, an HIV/AIDS clinical trials network established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Before joining the University of Pittsburgh in 1995, she served for 12 years on the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington.

Dr. Hillier is author or co-author of more than 400 articles, book chapters and abstracts in the medical literature and a former president of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is on the board of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Disease Research, and she received the Thomas Parran Award from the American Sexually Transmitted Disease Association for distinguished contributions to the field of sexually transmitted infections research and prevention.

Dr. Hillier is on the editorial boards of medical journals, including Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reviews in Contemporary Pharmacotherapy, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Anaerobe. Dr. Hillier received her undergraduate and doctoral degrees in bacteriology and public health from Washington State University.
