Jens Van Roey, MD

Dr. Van Roey is an independent consultant. Most recently, he served as director of Global Clinical Development at Janssen Global Public Health (previously Tibotec), a Belgian biotechnology company focusing on the clinical development of drugs for HIV and infectious diseases. His role included a particular emphasis on medical needs for the developing world. In 2004, Tibotec began working in partnership with IPM to develop a microbicide.

Dr. Van Roey trained at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, began his medical career with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Thailand and spent 15 years in Africa as general practitioner, where he founded the Centre for the Physically Handicapped in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Dr. Van Roey has been actively engaged, both personally and professionally, in the fight against AIDS since 1990. He serves as a member of both the Scientific Advisory Board and Access Advisory Committee at IPM, where he previously served as a member of the Board of Directors, and also serves on the International HIV/AIDS Alliance’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Van Roey recently spent a year on sabbatical with the MSF Access to Essential Medicines Campaign, focused on integrating the research and development needs of the developing world into development plans for investigational new drugs.
