Annalene Nel, MD, PhD
Dr. Nel leads IPM’s clinical research strategy in Africa and oversees IPM’s clinical trials and international clinical site development. She works closely with regulatory bodies in Africa and globally to ensure a favourable environment for microbicide research and eventual product access.
Previously, Dr. Nel worked as an independent clinical research consultant in drug development. With more than 20 years experience as a clinical research investigator, she has advanced experience in all levels of clinical research in a broad range of therapeutic areas.
Dr. Nel has previously worked as a medical officer and lectured in pharmacology, pulmonology and toxicology at the Tygerberg campus of the University of Stellenbosch Medical School. She is an active member of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s product development partnership global health clinical consortium and regulatory executive team.
Dr. Nel obtained a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in clinical pharmacology from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, where she also earned a PhD, qualified as a medical doctor and completed a certificate in the senior business programme.
